Exploring the Mongolia Bowl Headwall (Fernie) – Jan 26th 2011

February 3, 2011

I was going to blog about the tour we did on Jan 25th (previous day) but I have no photos. The plan then was to do the Fernie Alpine Resort to Island Lake Lodge traverse hitting the various ridge lines and bowls along the way but the weather was so shit (raining sideways up to 1500m) that Trev and Will quickly tired of my bad attitude toward the whole thing. We called it a day, drank beer and hit the hot tub instead.

Moving on…… to brighter skies. Welcome Jan 26th, sunshine, higher elevations and a new spot.

Me skiing off the southwest side of Mammoth head away from FAR and the Lost Boys Pass… the peak I’m heading towards is what we would ski off (left off the peak in the photo) back into Mongolia bowl.

So like the 24th we headed up Mammoth Head again only this time we skied southwest off the peak into the neighbouring drainage. The plan was to ski up the opposite side of that drainage and up Mammoth Head’s sister peak (don’t know the name unfortunately) in order to ski some nice steeper stuff back into Mongolia Bowl as well as check out a few lines off Mammoth Head itself. It ended up being a fantastic tour and a great day of exploring a little more of FAR’s immediate backcountry terrain. Snow on south facing aspects was almost a windblown corn and in the shady confines it was creamy and dreamy. As an added plus we skied the North facing trees off the Outer Mongolia Ridge and managed to get a few shots of the terrain in Outer Mongolia Bowl. Anyway after all that the ski out of Mongolia Bowl wasn’t too bad. Beers in the Griz. Sorted.

Hair control or a head wound????

Trev heads down towards Mongolia Bowl…

William….

Time for me to show Willard how to turn in style!
