Argentiere Basin (Chamonix) – Jan 16th 2011

January 18, 2011

Another day of blazing sunshine and the original plan was to head out for some steep skiing on the south face of Col d’Entreves.  We got to the Aiguilles du Midi for the first bin up only to find that the rusty old cable box was having some technical difficulties and not running. F*ck! So after a about 15minutes moping around trying to figure out what to do we settled on a tour in the Argentiere Basin. We piled into Pete’s sweet ride (a Hyundai complete with how to speak Italian cd’s) and made our way over to the Grand Montets ski area. Up to the top and a quick traverse down to the Argentiere Glacier to put skins on.

Still with no firm objective we took a look around and settled on the Glacier des Rouges du Dolent mainly because it didn’t have any tracks in it yet and we had a late start (thanks to the problems with the Midi).

Tour up was about 900m from the Argentiere Glacier to the top of the Glacier des Rouges du blah blah blah (top was about 3450m).  Overall a great tour in lovely surroundings. Not the most thrilling ride down though.

Can’t complain about the surroundings. Les Courtes Couloir can be seen on the left.
